The construction of acrylic-surfaced tennis courts has become one of the most popular choices amongst modern sports facilities. With their high performance, durability and aesthetic appeal, acrylic surfaces are used across a wide range of applications, from professional tournaments to recreational use. At Türksas, drawing on years of experience and technical expertise in tennis court construction, we offer the highest quality acrylic tennis court construction services. In this article, we will comprehensively examine all aspects of acrylic tennis court construction, including the technical details and benefits.

What is an acrylic tennis court?

Acrylic tennis courts are professional playing surfaces created by applying specially formulated acrylic components to a layer of ceramic or gravel. These surfaces enable controlled ball bounce, optimise players’ mobility and minimise the risk of injury.

Acrylic systems feature an environmentally friendly, high-performance top coat composed of water-based elastomeric components. This system provides the ideal coefficient of friction required for tennis, making it suitable for both fast and slow playing styles.

Acrylic surfaces, which are recognised and certified by professional tennis organisations, are fully compliant with international standards. Thanks to their formulations, which are resistant to sunlight and weather conditions, they maintain their performance for many years.

Applications of Acrylic Tennis Courts

Acrylic-surfaced tennis courts have a wide range of applications and are successfully installed in various settings. They are the preferred choice in many places, from sports schools to professional clubs.

• Professional and semi-professional tennis clubs
• University and school sports facilities
• Hotels and tourism complexes
• Community sports centres and public facilities
• Private sports academies and training centres
• Summer camps and sports tourism facilities

In these areas, acrylic-surfaced tennis courts demonstrate long-term durability despite high usage. As maintenance requirements are low, operating costs are kept to a minimum.

Technical Details of the Construction of an Acrylic Tennis Court

The construction of a professional acrylic tennis court involves a number of technical stages, each of which is of critical importance. The basic structure extends from the preparation of the base layer right through to the top decorative layer.

Site Preparation and Infrastructure

In the first stage, the site on which the tennis court is to be built is properly levelled. The required slope and drainage system are meticulously designed to prevent water from pooling. At this stage, Türksas determines the precise measurements using CAD technology and professional engineering work.

Following the ground compaction process, a base layer of granulated gravel or crushed rock, 15–20 cm thick, is laid. This layer ensures the mass stability of the sub-base and facilitates water drainage.

Acrylic System Application

An elastomeric acrylic primer is applied to the gravel layer. This coat maximises grip and adhesion. Next, a layer of acrylic binder containing ceramic particles is spread and compacted with a roller.

A coloured acrylic surfacing product is applied as the top layer. This layer enhances the court’s visibility, provides shock absorption and offers players optimum grip. The tennis court lines are marked out in accordance with professional standards.

Layer	Thickness	Function
Gravel/Rock Sub-base	15–20 cm	Drainage and stability
Acrylic Primer	3–4 mm	Flammability and adhesion
Elastomeric Binder	8–10 mm	Shock absorption
Coloured Acrylic Surface	2–3 mm	Visibility and the flu

The Advantages of Building an Acrylic Tennis Court

The many advantages of acrylic flooring systems are the main reasons for the widespread use of this type of court. In terms of performance, durability and aesthetics, they meet the requirements of modern sports facilities.

Firstly, acrylic surfaces are approved by international tennis federations and are used in professional tournaments. They provide consistent playing conditions for players and reduce the risk of injury.

Secondly, maintenance costs are low. Whilst regular cleaning and annual maintenance are sufficient, the need for complex repairs is kept to a minimum. Thanks to its water permeability, rapid drainage is ensured in wet weather.

From an aesthetic point of view, the colour options are endless. Corporate identity and brand colours can be enhanced with bespoke designs. UV protection technology prevents colour fading and ensures the surface retains its vibrant appearance for many years.

• Low maintenance and repair costs
• Quick-drying and available for use on 300+ days a year
• Shock absorption suitable for players’ health
• Environmentally friendly, water-based acrylic formulation
• Eligibility for certification for professional tournaments

Cost of Building an Acrylic Tennis Court

The cost of constructing an acrylic-surfaced tennis court varies depending on a number of factors. Each project is designed and priced to suit its specific conditions and requirements.

Firstly, the scope of site preparation is a key factor affecting the cost. Ground conditions, the gradient, the complexity of the drainage system and the labour involved in infrastructure preparation all determine the total cost. Projects requiring more complex site preparation naturally entail higher costs.

The second factor is the quality of the materials to be used. High-grade acrylic resin formulations, ceramic aggregates, and the number and thickness of the structural layers all affect the material budget. Türksas offers a range of quality options to suit the project budget.

Thirdly, the project site and the number of courts play a significant role. Projects with multiple courts can be carried out at a lower cost per unit. Labour productivity increases and material wastage is minimised.

The fourth factor is the pressure to meet deadlines. Urgent projects may incur higher costs than those on the standard programme. Seasonal conditions, weather and the availability of engineering equipment are also taken into account in cost calculations.

Cost Factor	Effect	Control Method
Land Preparation	High	Preliminary geotechnical investigation
Material Quality	High	Quality selection
Labour and Equipment	Centre	Effective planning
Climate Factors	Low-Medium	Seasonal planning

To optimise the budget, Türksas provides a detailed engineering review and cost analysis in advance. This ensures that customers are aware of all cost factors beforehand and are not caught off guard.

The Construction Process for an Acrylic Tennis Court

A professional acrylic tennis court project consists of systematic stages from start to finish. Each stage depends on the previous one being carried out correctly, and quality control is critical.

The first stage is the design and planning phase. Client requirements are analysed, site surveys are carried out and detailed technical plans are drawn up. Drainage, gradients and documentation are determined at this stage.

The second stage is site preparation. The ground is levelled, compacted and a drainage system is installed. This stage must be carried out with great care and checked frequently.

The third stage involves the application of the acrylic flooring system. The primer, binder and topcoats are applied in accordance with the climatic conditions. Each subsequent coat is applied only once the previous one has fully cured.

The final stage comprises line marking, final inspection and handover. Professional line markings are applied, all standards are checked, and the facility is handed over to the client, ready for use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an acrylic tennis court last?

Provided they are regularly maintained and repaired, acrylic tennis courts retain their performance for 8–12 years. This period may be slightly shorter with heavy use, and longer with light use.

Can an acrylic tennis court be used in all weather conditions?

Yes, acrylic flooring is durable in hot, cold and temperate climates. However, extreme heat or very cold conditions can affect installation and maintenance procedures. Its high drainage capacity makes it an ideal choice for rainy regions.

Does the acrylic court have low friction during play?

No, acrylic surfaces are designed to provide optimum grip. The level of grip can be adjusted to suit a player’s style by controlling the aggregate size and the acrylic formulation.

Is an acrylic tennis court eco-friendly?

Yes, most acrylic systems are made from water-based, environmentally friendly formulations. They contain recyclable materials and chemical emissions are kept to a minimum.

Can we convert the existing tennis court to an acrylic surface?

Yes, depending on the condition of the old court, it is often possible to carry out the resurfacing work. Surface preparation, the repair of damaged sections and the application of an acrylic system can all be successfully completed.
